Just a short note to let you know that we were really pleased with the individual items, that Shaw Stairs Ltd made for our new house. We have had numerous complimentary comments from visitors, and my clients regarding staircase etc. Your staffs were also courteous and professional, I will definitely be recommending Shaw Stairs again.

What a great company, from the first meeting with Chris (designer) to plan our new stairs, through to the survey with Chris, to the fitting carried out by Brian and Jowel (whose workmanship is exemplary). All concerned made this a pleasant experience. We are absolutely delighted with the end product and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Shaw Stairs to anyone.

"I must let the world know what a fantastic job your guys did, with oak and glass, to remodel our staircase. It is stunning and the care taken with tiny details has been quite amazing. Moreover, it was a pleasure to have the pair of them in our home. Permanent smiles on their faces, obviously loving the job and proud of the result, Great stuff, Thank You All."

If someone mentions loft or attic to you, you couldn't be blamed for picturing a dark, dusty and creepy space! Well we are here to give you a few of our top tips when converting your loft or attic space to change this stereotype!

The very first thing you will need to consider is how you gain access to the loft space. It is all well and good having a ladder at the moment, but when the loft is converted into an additional living space this isn't very practical. As a staircase manufacturer that specialise in loft conversion stairs, we can offer various options from a full oak staircase to a alternating, spacesaver stairs. The is always the initial disadvantage of needing to sacrifice some space to accomodate the stairs, however this almost almost outweighs the negative when you see how much space can be gain from converting the attic space.

Secondly, in the intial planning stages, you really need to consider how you will create and maximise the natural light available to you. You will almost certainly, have a window put in but why stop at one? Why not have several velux style windows, such as this recent loft conversion picture below, completed by Econoloft.

Use of velux windows to maximise natural lightPicture from Econoloft's website gallery of projects completed.

You will see that here two velux windows have been installed and a carefully positioned mirror with a white colour scheme allows light to reach each corner of the room. It is really important to ensure that you not only let light in but you learn how to maximise it. For example, the use of light, pastel colours helps to reflect light and using a light colour on the ceiling to the rest of the room helps to create the illusions of a higher ceiling.

A key requirement between current house hunters is character. Have you ever looked at a hundred pictures of new builds, extensions and loft conversions and realised they all look exactly the same with their white walls, square windows and doors?! Everyone is crying out for something different and a bit of character. Consider how you can incorporate this with the design and decor.

As you will see in the picture above of a recent loft conversion completed by the Loft Conversion Company, a simple step and alcove has been turned into a feature and has become a children's reading area. It just proves you haven't got to make drastic changes or designs to add a bit of character and individuality to the room.
